Heavy Machinery & Transport Opportunity

The Department of Water and Sanitation is hiring an experienced Heavy Vehicle Driver/Operator to operate specialised plant and machinery, transport work teams and materials, and support maintenance activities. The position is suitable for candidates with heavy vehicle driving experience, a valid Code EC/EC1 licence with PDP, and experience operating heavy equipment.

Requirements

  • NQF Level 4 qualification
  • Valid Code EC/EC1 driver’s licence with PDP
  • Certified competency or operating certificate for heavy plant/machinery
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience driving heavy motor vehicles and operating heavy equipment
  • Knowledge of traffic and road safety regulations
  • Mechanical knowledge of heavy vehicles and machinery
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)
  • Basic record keeping and reporting skills
  • Good communication skills

Main Duties

  • Operate specialised plant and equipment
  • Conduct daily roadworthy inspections
  • Ensure vehicles are serviced on time
  • Transport work teams, materials and equipment
  • Collect goods from suppliers and department stores
  • Record daily trips, fuel usage and fluid levels
  • Maintain vehicle and equipment registers
  • Perform routine inspections on vehicles and machinery
  • Identify minor mechanical problems and arrange repairs
  • Ensure safe keeping of equipment and vehicles
  • Maintain clean equipment storage areas
  • Assist with maintenance work at gauging stations
  • Assist with refurbishment and construction activities
  • Support technical personnel with special tasks
